ELECTRIC CARIBBEAN SEA BLUE

Lot: Pak-Tourmaline-83

STONE 1

12.53 Carats & Approximately 10x11x12 MM. This is a nice and chunky crystal section shaped for super high yield. This stone looks to be the Bluer Stone of the three; however, it is a slight bit darker than the other two stones. The C Axis on this is open though it is a bit on the dark side and we would suggest steep angles for the ends when faceting to insure a bright finished gemstone. This stone should cut eye-clean to flawless with your eyes closed.

STONE 2

20.74 Carats & Approximately 8x9x30 MM. This is a nice crystal section shaped for super high yield. This stone has some very slight Green overtones and is a LOVELY Caribbean Sea Blue in Color. This stone looks to be roughly 55% Eye-Clean while the remainder has some minor inclusions that may mask up well with proper orientation. Since this is a long piece the C Axis looks closed; however, if you cut this into multiple stones the C Axis may open up though it will probably be a bit dark. We would suggest steep angles for the ends when faceting to insure a bright finished gemstone.

STONE 3

54.31 Carats & Approximately 12x12x42 MM. This is the monster in the lot and the seller of the material refused to let us purchase this stone alone hence the two other stones in this lot. This is an AWESOME crystal section ideally shaped for super high yield. This stone has some very slight Green overtones and is a LOVELY Caribbean Sea Blue in Color. This stone looks is EYE-CLEAN for the most part with the exception of some minor surface nicks that should easily facet out with normal faceting. Since this is a long piece the C Axis looks closed; however, if you cut this into multiple stones the C Axis may open up though it will probably be a bit dark. We would suggest steep angles for the ends when faceting to insure a bright finished gemstone. This stone itself is worth the lot price as we only ran into two stones of this caliber in the entire market and purchased both.

DESCRIPTION:

Spectacular lot of three Afghan Tourmalines with a lovely Electric Blue to an almost Caribbean Sea Blue Color. Please see above for a detailed description of each particular stone. This is the material that has made Afghan Tourmaline the benchmark in Tourmaline perfection! It doesn't get much better than this (Nodules being the exception). Every one of these is a SUPER lovely color and an ideally shaped crystal section. This is the material that runs $300-$700+ per carat once cut and is practically impossible to get your hands on in the rough. This material is THE BEST material we saw in the local market and it was purchased on a selection basis from a very large lot. We essentially took out the best stones from a very large Tourmaline lot (left the seller a bit upset) and you really only get a few stones the caliber of the largest stone of the above three in a Tourmaline Lot here that runs $50,000+. This material is impossible to get a hold of and we were EXTREMELY lucky to have the seller let us cherry pick these.

This is TOP TOP faceting grade material and most stones should cut 10x clean with a little hard work. The largest stone in here looks like it should cut around 20-25 carats. This lot is not for the amateur and this is PREMIUM ROUGH! If you are interested in similar colored material in smaller sizes there are several lots up and you should take a look at the particulars on them. This stuff has to be seen to be fully appreciated.

COOL FACTS:
  1. Afghan Tourmaline pockets tend to be relatively small in size and as a result consistency in color & quality is a rarity! We have never seen Afghan Tourmaline sold by the kilo with like colored and quality material and lots are generally small in size seldom going over 1/2-1 kilo.

  2. All Afghan Tourmaline is exhumed from primary deposits and as a result mining costs are considerably higher due to dynamite expenditures and traveling expenditures to get to remote mining areas. It is also interesting to note that since all Afghan Tourmaline is from primary deposits most rough will usually have sharp crystal faces.
